Hinged Glass Tops

Hinged Glass Tops Hinged glass tops on my 125G tank.

Hinged glass tops are always a nice thing to have with a tank, and I was very pleased that they were included when I bought this used 125G. Since the tank has no center brace, the glass tops are actually an interesting contraption. Instead of the center brace, there is a non-hinged glass top for the middle of the tank. This part has plastic side parts on which the hinged tops on the sides can rest. For maintenance, the whole glass top can be removed without taken the canopy off the tank by removing both hinged tops first, and then sliding the middle part to one side, to come out from under the middle support of the canopy.

One thing to keep in mind when constructing a canopy is to ensure it is high enough so you can fully open the glass tops under the installed lighting. Unfortunately, I did not take this into consideration when building my canopy, and the glass tops will hit the lighting, and don't stay open easily. As soon as I have thought of an easy fix for this little problem, I'll make sure to post it here 🙂
